The Importance of Regular Teeth Cleanings

One of the most important steps in your oral hygiene routine should be to make sure you see your dentist at least once a year for cleanings and check-ups. Even brushing twice a day, flossing, and using mouthwash don't ensure that your teeth and mouth are healthy and even though these are good habits to help you maintain your dental health, it's may not always be enough.

Why You Need Regular Cleanings

  • Preventive care - Cleanings work alongside your daily oral hygiene routine to make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy. It is impossible to remove all of the plaque from your teeth even with daily brushing and flossing, and when left unchecked, plaque becomes tartar which cannot be removed with brushing and flossing alone. If tartar begins to build up and push underneath your gums it can lead to gingivitis, gum disease, or even periodontal disease.
  • Catch problems early - If you see your dentist regularly, they will be able to see the warning signs of possible issues before they become more problematic. Common dental issues such as cavities and gum disease can be treated immediately saving you time, money, and sometimes a lot of pain. If left untreated these problems can lead to tooth decay or tooth loss.
  • Overall health - Dentists can not only catch early signs of dental issues, but many general health symptoms start in the mouth. Inflammatory diseases such as Alzheimer's, heart disease, and diabetes can all be found early by your dentist during check-ups. Poor oral health can also lead to poor general health. Those with periodontitis are twice as likely to have coronary artery disease.
  • Beautiful smile - Regular cleanings keep your teeth healthy and bright. Certain foods and drinks can leave stains on your teeth leaving you feeling self-conscious, but cleanings can help remove some of the staining to keep your teeth white and beautiful.
